The Mental Health & Motherhood Summit is a virtual event designed to connect mothers with mental health resources, offering a low-barrier approach that deeply values community and connection. It is 100% volunteer driven by mothers who care about building up awareness and support for other mothers.
What & Why
In 2021, I had birthed my daughter by an emergency c-section. Ever vigilant to the red flags of depression (thanks to a lifelong struggle and countless cultural warnings), I saw a therapist from 20 weeks pregnant up until 1 week postpartum. That final appointment ended within 5 minutes of logging on, a baby projectile vomiting, and me slamming the computer screen while sobbing, “I can’t do this!”
I tore off the soaking clothes on both of our bodies and swaddled us together, skin to skin, in my blankets. Somewhere between the sobs and tears, I contacted my husband to come home, and he found us there 30 minutes later on the couch, naked together in a cocoon.
My postpartum rage and anxiety shocked and shamed me. The isolation of depression was only soothed by a yearning for community but finding one felt like one more thing I had to figure out.
In 2023, the tidal wave nearly drowned me. I lost my business, became more depressed, and dealt with chronic pain/illness for 14 months.
The Mental Health & Motherhood 2024 event was a response to the questions I kept asking myself:
How do mothers build/find community?
How do we access mental health resources when insurance, finance, time, and educational barriers prevent ease of access?
Why do I have to wait 3-6 months to get mental health care when I’m trying to prevent emergency mental health care right now?
What can we do about these questions, especially in a time such as this?
We can dare to bridge the mental health gap for mothers. Let’s go.
